After your rug is picked up from your home with great care it is brought to our studio where all care and cleansing is performed in a controlled environment. Your rug will undergo an extremely thorough dusting process in which beater bars and vacuuming tools are used to remove all dry particulate soil from the rug. This is the most important step before the wet wash of your rug.

Your rug will undergo a series of tests to determine the structural stability and colorfastness of all dyes present in your rug. We will then proceed with the traditional full immersion hand washing of this rug. Any pre-spotting takes place before a full immersion wash. Your rug will then be completely soaked in clear water to help prepare for the wash loosening soluble soils and creating a buffer for agitation. Just as when you wash your hair first you rinse your hair with clear water before adding the shampoo. To help reduce the risk of dye migration or color run the rug is soaked in an acid pH solution to stabilize the dyes.

Even though this rug has passed our dye fastness tests it is still done as a precaution. Your rug is then saturated in a neutral pH shampoo designed specifically for natural fibers. Then it is agitated by hand. Our special friend shampoo is applied to the fringe and the fringe is agitated by hand. All agitation is performed by hand to bypass the damage to the face yarns which can occur using mechanical buffing

machines.

Any adverse reaction is instantly recognized and easily monitored although more labor is required. We feel this is well worth the outcome after your rug is effectively shampooed and agitated.

Next, the soft water rinse will take place. All water used in rinsing undergoes a five-stage filtration descaling and conditioning process leaving only soft drinkable water to run through your rug. This ensures your rugs face yarns returned soft and free of chlorine or any minerals present in the normal tap or hard water which may be harmful to natural fibers.

Just as nomadic tribes have taken their rugs to running streams and rivers for thousands of years though much more knowledge is needed now due to the many different types of rugs being washed the basic concept remains the same. Squeegees are used to press running water through the face of the rug out the back repeatedly. This completely flushes out all soil and shampoo without the use of heat which can damage natural fibers or high pressure which may distort them.

Your fringes will then be rinsed under higher pressure. The pressure is set just at the right amount to be highly effective yet safe after the rinse is complete. All excess water is removed completely by hand using squeegees and other methods. This is done until the rug stops releasing water. Extracting water by hand is more time-consuming and labor-intensive than other methods but is by far the safest as large industrial rug presses may damage a rug if it is used in the wrong setting or fed through improperly.

Various techniques are used to dry the fringe after all excess moisture is removed from the rug. It then undergoes an extensive grooming process in which the face yarns are groom from top to bottom or with the pile using a soft horsehair brush. The top is where the weaver ended the piece, the bottom where the weaver begins during the grooming of a silk rug. This process may take up to two hours depending on the rug’s structural integrity and dye fastness. It will be dried either flat on the ground using air movers or on a drying pole.

After your rug is dry it will be inspected for quality. Any additional fringe detailing will take place at this time. This is also when a fine fabric protector is applied to a rug and groomed into the fibers which will protect your rug from wear and tear. Spots and spills and any die bleeding brought about by liquid spills before your rug is released is vacuumed and groomed a second time. This removes any dry soils which may have come loose during the wet wash. Your rug will then be rolled up and a time will be scheduled for a courteous delivery.
